This project is near and dear to my heart. While covering the men and women who bravely serve our nation, I learned that even in the age of facebook, twitter, youtube and instagram one of the things they miss most when they are deployed is hearing about the local news from their hometown or homestation. That information inspired the concept for Homefront: San Diego, the first local newscast produced for deployed servicemen and women. It also contained a special bonus, personal messages from family members.
With the support of Marine Corps and Navy Public affairs teams, the program I produced was distributed to tens of thousands of troops serving in Afghanistan and on Navy Carrier Strike Groups, and Amphibious Ready Groups on patrol around the globe. I will always be proud of the mission Homefront: San Diego accomplished, keeping out troops connected to home.
